How does solar power work?

An inverter then transforms DC into alternating current (AC), suitable for household use. This generated electricity powers your home, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Optionally, excess energy can be fed back into the grid, often earning credits. In simple terms, solar power allows you to tap into the sun's energy, providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for your electricity needs. Additionally, in many setups, excess electricity can be fed back into the grid through a process called net metering, allowing you to receive credits or compensation for the energy you contribute.

What is Net Metering?

The Net-Metering Program is a non-fiscal strategy prescribed in RA 9513 to promote the
utilization of RE in the country. It is designed as an incentive scheme that aims to encourage
electricity customers to participate in the generation of RE to meet part of its load demand,
thereby reducing its purchased electricity from the DU. Specifically for electricity customers with
rooftop solar systems, during 10Am to 3PM there may be excess electricity for its load, thus they are able to export power to the distribution system where they earn credit which will be applied to the following month. Under the Net-Metering program, the electricity customers are allowed to install an on-site, i.e. within the electricity customer’s premises, RE system not exceeding 100 kilowatts (kW) in capacity to generate electricity for their own use. The RE systems include wind, biomass, biogas energy systems or run-of-river micro-hydro or such other RE systems. The rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) is currently the popular RE net-metering technology.

How long does a solar panel installation typically take?

The duration of a solar panel installation varies based on factors such as the size and complexity of the system, as well as local permitting requirements. Generally, installations can be completed within a few days to a couple of weeks. A typical 6-10kWp can be installed in 2-5days. How do changes in weather conditions affect solar panel performance?

Weather conditions impact solar panel performance. While direct sunlight maximizes efficiency, panels still generate power on cloudy days. Cooler temperatures favor better performance, but excessive heat can slightly reduce efficiency. Rain cleans panels, maintaining optimal function, and Heavy Rain and Stormy weather temporarily reduce output. High-quality panels withstand wind and storms. Nighttime and darkness mean no electricity generation. Overall, modern panels are resilient, meeting industry standards for durability and performance across various weather conditions.

What happens if there is a power outage?

In a grid-tied solar PV system, when a power outage occurs, the system is designed to automatically disconnect from the grid for safety reasons. This is to prevent the backflow of electricity into the grid, which could pose a danger to utility workers attempting to repair the power lines. As a result, during a power outage, the solar PV system also goes offline. However, some advanced systems may include a backup power solution, such as a battery storage system, allowing the solar panels to continue supplying electricity to essential loads in the home or business during an outage.

Is it possible to add more solar panels to my system in the future?

Yes, in a grid-tied solar PV system, it is typically possible to expand the system by adding more solar panels in the future. The ability to expand the system depends on several factors, including the capacity of the inverter and the available space on your property.
